Tu Pac Interlude

In America, you cannot talk about the history of rap music without mentioning the name of the greatest rapper that America has ever known. Tu pac Amaru Shakur has been named by the rolling stone magazine the 86th greatest artist of all time. He was born in 1971 in east Harlem in the time when his race was still suffering from racism, violence, segregation and racial discrimination. Growing up and seeing the misery of his race, he felt like he had the mission to carry a strong message in his lyrics, talking about violence and hardship in inner cities, racism, social problems, and conflicts. He has done a wonderful work with his famous interlude from his album “rose that grew from the concrete”.

In this outstanding interlude, we can see how tu pac has considered himself as a messenger and the rap music as a tool to transmit his message. This famous interlude is available on line in form of poem and interpreted by many artists. This interlude is a wonderful work of art seeing it as a poem. To my point of view, what’s making it important is the fact that it talks about how rap music is a great tool to transmit messages to the community. Below is the entire interlude that I hope everyone who read it will enjoy its message and sense.
Right now, it is it is almost.. it is almost uhh,
IMPOSSIBLE for you not to see how strong rap has gotten
Y’knowhatI’msayin, it’s it’s like umm..
our our brothers and sisters, our youths, and some of our adults
their ear is PINNED to rap music right now
And if you really wanna get our message out
and really wanna start teachin, we need to start doin that
We we really need to start usin, our methods, y’knowhatI’msayin?
The Last Poets did it with poetry
And uhh, and and.. even in our history
from a ancient Afl- African civilization
poets went from village to village
And that’s how, stories and messages and lessons were taught
Y’knowhatI’mssayin, and so like you say, history repeats itself
And so.. it it was, it was.. at it was, y’know obvious
It was, pick it up, y’know?
Bein the race that we are, bein the strong race that we are
We picked it up, we picked up those positive, those positive vibes
and we started rappin and so
I think it is, it’s a very good medium too

The most important and significant aspect of tu pac’s interlude is the fact that he talks about his people as great messengers and artists from the “ancient African civilization poets” to him. “And that’s how, stories and messages and lessons were taught”. We can see here that tu Pac’s first goal was to teach lessons to his public, so they could get the message through his music. So we can clearly see that this interlude reflects the history of the African American civilization. When he said “being the race that we are, being the strong race that we are we can see here that he is talking about the misery of his race from the slavery. His race has survived and by rapping “picked up those positive vibes” from the ancient African American poets and singers. Nowadays, this interlude represents history from a great rapper who has marked the rap music history in America.

 

Slavery Art

In America, there is one historical practice that is never going to be forgotten. That practice is the slavery which was the importation of black people from Africa to the plantation of America. This horrible human exploitation has marked the history of the world for ever. Reason why there was a huge need to capture the awful scene of slave exploitation or slave sales so that the whole world and the future generations will know what had happened to those innocent people who had been taken away from their native continent and brought to the new continent of America. A wonderful work has been done by Eyre Crowe who was a Victorian painter of historical and genre work of art.

Eyre Crowe was a European artist who spent a period of six month in America in 1852-1853. He accompanied William Makepeace Thackeray on his lecture tour in different places in US like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia where the slave sales were common at that time and where inhuman slave treatments were going on. He experienced horrible scenes that made his paintings and sketches based on his journey. The work of Eyre Crowe is a high value work that captured multiple scenes of slave sales and slaves treatment. To my point of view, what makes his work outstanding is the fact that it narrates the slavery era to the new generation and the future generations. Most of his paintings represent a call for greater public condemnation of slavery by the British. His paintings reflect slave sales, after slave sales scenes, and the exhibition of slaves waiting for sale. The paintings bellow show a slave sale in Charleston, South Carolina (1854) and an after sale scene (1853) when slaves were “marched under escort of their new owners across the town to the railway station where they took places and went south”.

                                                              

 

The most important and significant aspect about his work of art is the fact that it is a narrative painting that that tells the whole world the history of slavery in America. At the same time it represented a wakeup call at that time for the slavery abolishment. Emotionally, his work reflects sadness, pain, and the savagery of the people who were practicing that trade, but artistically it is a stupendous work of art.

The work of Eyre Crowe reflected some political aspect of America also as he made use of his experience to help illustrate the growing crisis of the US civil war in 1861 as one of his  sketch shows an image published by the illustrated London news (1861-1862) showing the secession movement in an entrance hall to an hotel at Charleston. this sketch can be found on his website www.oocities.org . Bellow, are some other paintings that can be found on his website also:

       

The esthetic of courtroom sketches

People are really curious about what’s really happening in US courtroom during trials, especially for the big cases or historical cases. Since cameras are not allowed in many jurisdictions, the outside public can only rely on one person in the courtroom to show them in images what’s going on in courtrooms. That person is the courtroom sketch artist who attends judicial proceedings as member of the public. William Hennessy confirmed that reliability with his book called ALL RISE which is a collection of his more memorable trial that he put all together to create a wonderful work .

William Hennessy is one of the preeminent artists who worked in the field of courtroom for twenty five years and has developed an outstanding expertise in the field. His work is available on his website under the link www.courtroomart.com ,where his biography, gallery, and book are available. Videos are also available in form of interview in which Hennessy talks about his work of art and his career as a courtroom sketch artist.

The work of William Hennessy is a tremendous realization because his book gathered a huge amount of actions that had happened in courts and he captured them exactly like they happened. To me what makes the beauty of his art is the fact that he captured the actions simultaneously while they were happening without missing any details. The sketches he shows in his book reflect emotions, gestures, facial expressions, body language, and even unexpected action like fights or when a prisoner is trying to escape. In other words his sketches are alive because when you looking at them you may feel like you are present at the scene living the actions. Having examined a lot of his sketches I noticed that some of the action that he captured had happed in a matter of seconds, yet he never missed any details which mean that he captures the images in his memory and reproduces them simultaneously. The most important and significant thing about his sketches is the fact that they narrate the judicial proceeding to the outside public who don’t attend trials and do not have any other mean to figure out what exactly happened in courtroom. To prevent distractions and to preserve the privacy of those participating in court proceedings, cameras are not allowed in courtroom. So it makes perfectly sense when Elizabeth Williams who completed sketches from the famous Bernard Madoff sentencing says “my job is to show the public what happened, I am their eyes”. This shows the importance of the courtroom sketcher in the courtroom. After a deep analysis of William Hennesy’s work of art, I deducted that without the courtroom sketch artist, American trials would be a mystery to the outside public that perhaps would just know the judge decision by the media but would not have any images to satisfy their visual curiosity.

The work of William Hennessy reflects some political and historical aspect of the American society. As he captured in some of his sketches some historical cases, he also captured the case of some political figures of this country. Let’s take the example of the Mayor Marion Barry’s case and the historical case of Zacaria Moussaoui about the 9/11 terrorism attack in New York.  The sketches bellow show those particular two cases that he captured and included in his book ALL RISE.

The William Hennessy work of art is a great realization that deserves lot of credits. He succeeded to capture and expose the courtroom proceedings to the outside public that now has the opportunity to see in images what’s really going on in US courtrooms, but also to admire a stupendous work of art.
